IN OTHER NEWS (December 19th 2016):
Welp! That's it for Issue #5. Yeup, it ends on a cliffhanger. What's under the mask? Why is this girl so important? Why take off the mask? You'll have to read issue #6 to find out!

That's also it for me this year; I need a break to do some behind-the-scenes tinkering (a la: the email list, re-doing the UI for the other issues... AGAIN. Patreon...maybe? You get the idea.) That's going to be a new practice, starting with issue #6: making/posting the current issue for as long as is necessary, and then taking a one month break between issues to make my mess a little more presentable. While it won't be exactly a full month, The Crimson Fly will be on break until January 9th, when Issue #6: The Easy Job starts up.

"But wait, Skipper," you say. "What about the end-of-issue full video on Youtube? (And my $50 for reminding people of that fact?)" Well... One of the things I want to try out is film festivals with the comic. Lemme do some more research, and I'll get back to you.  Regardless of when the video goes up (and it will, don't worry about it), the comic will start back up on Monday, January 9th, and an announcement for the video will go up before it goes live.

With that being said, I'll see you all next year! Happy Holidays!

I got nothing. Animation will be available on Wednesday. It'll be good! I promise!

Hey all! Welp...

Was the wait worth it? For you guys (If I were you, and not the author), I'd say "no."  The story grinded to a halt for a few weeks over 10 seconds of animation that probably could have been tackled a different way. you'd be forgiven for thinking the strip randomly died, especially with no explanation.

Was it worth it for me, as a creator? Absolutely.  I got to try out an animation technique (a rotating perspective in 2D, where backgrounds are hell if you have to redraw them, but move them slightly) I'd never properly attempted before, and it came out looking relatively decent. I'd never find an opportunity to test out something like this on my own, and that's one of the mission goals for the Crimson Fly's existence: to become a better artist through working on an ongoing project.

Was it worth it? Absolutely. I have one more tool in my toolbox to make this comic even better, and I know my limits stretch even further than I thought they did.  Granted, I also learned that I need to start allocating time towards R&D rather than learning on the fly, but I think that payoff was worth the cost.

Will this happen again in the future? Probably, though probably not with as much frequency. Not every strip has to be an animation spectacle, after all.  But I will do my best to be more "open" about when they occur (maybe posting WIP versions while I work so you guys aren't entirely in the dark?).  If you're still reading (both this comic and the post): Thank you for your patience, and I'll see you next week.

We're almost done with this story; two/three more strips left! After that, I'm done for the rest of the year.  I want to start making that a habit; taking a one-month break between stories so I can do some behind-the-scenes cleanup (compiling for video/print/app/etc, setting up patreon/email lists, all that jazz). That being said, I'm probably going to be done some time into December, so as tempting as it would be to simply "stop" after Thanksgiving, we're not going to do that; I'm GOING to finish out this story and then we'll take a break, and then move into Issue #6: "The Easy Job."

And then it finally happened: SkipperWing was late (barring planned hiatuses/breaks).  Hey guys. I'm really sorry.  Last week hit me really hard, and I didn't realize it until it was Sunday night and I STILL didn't feel like doing the thing I love most in the world. You know how they say you should know your limits and when to stop? Well, its easier to gauge from the outside looking in.  I dunno. I still don't feel 100% about anything right now. At least the year, and issue #5, for that matter are almost over.

Woof! This is hyper late, relatively speaking (still hit the Monday deadline, but much closer than I would have liked, obviously).  That's my fault, I could/should have at least posted the static comic, but I thought I could get the animation done faster than I did. It didn't help that I added more animation/panels in (Only the throws in panels 1&7 was initially to be animated) than was strictly necessary. Still, I think the improvements made this a much more dynamic strip! What do you think?

Also, if you want to check out the Halloween pic -or any other special events, like hiatuses- go hit up the archives (at least, until I get a special page going for them!)

The Crimson Fly #--: "A brief Hiatus"

<<FIRST | <PREVIOUS | [ARCHIVE] | NEXT> | LAST>>

This Week: I'm taking a break.

Hey all.

Um... Wow. This is going to be uncomfortable, but here we go.  So, this year, I started selling the Crimson Fly at conventions.  The thing that I had not learned, however is that cons take a lot of time, energy, and money; eating up the week/month before (in prep), the weekend of (in sales and presence) and week/month after (in recovery).   And, as you might surmise, I'm not good at things I've never done before, so every con has been ..."interesting."  To this end, starting next year, I'm going try and only do one con per quarter/every 3 months (The First being Katsucon 2017. See you there!). Unfortunately, THIS YEAR, I signed up for both Baltimore Comic-con and Small Press Expo (this weekend), not realizing they were virtually back to back. Whoops!

What this has meant for the comic is that I've fallen a little behind; the last two updates haven't had their animation done on time, and, if you've noticed, haven't had their speedpaint videos linked to them.  This is a few different kinds of unacceptable, and it means that I haven't gauged my ability to get stuff done properly accordingly.  So what to do?

Take a break.  I'm going to take a break; do/deal with SPX accordingly, catch up on the work I should have had done, possibly set up an extra strip (not likely, but I can dream), and/or do some more research into getting the comic onto the app store (also not likely, but this is a necessity that needs to become a reality). What this means for you all is that the Crimson Fly is going on a 2 week hiatus and will return Monday, October 3rd (Since the beginning of the month is always a great time to start things)

Sorry about that, but if I don't take it now, either I'm going to burn out, the quality of the comic is going to suffer, or both simultaneously, which will lead to the death of the strip.  See ya then!

PS: once I reboot, I'm going to move this little hiccup out of the way so as not to interrupt the flow of the story.

IN OTHER NEWS (September 5th, 2016):
Man! Baltimore Comic-Con was AN EXPERIENCE! Met a whole bunch of new people, learned some awesome lessons courtesy of the pros I got to wig out in front of, and take a lot of pictures of cosplayers that made sitting in front of the table a lot less boring.

Unfortunately, this didn't really translate into a lot of sales, but I think that speaks more to my inexperience as a convention vendor than anyone's interest (or lack thereof) in the comic (Ex: Having a banner adds verticality to a display and makes them easily discoverable in a crowd. Guess what I didn't have).

It also ate into my production time (since quiet time is better spent scouting for new potential audiences, rather than just working on the comic, oblivious to passer-bys), which isn't that bad for the static strips (which generally only take a few hours), but for the animation/interactive bits... Well... (see above, if you're reading this today)

But overall, I have mixed feelings coming out of B-more. No time to dwell, though, SPX (Small Press Expo-hit "next" until you find me) is next weekend! AGH!

In other news, I feel kinda weird about this one. Weird that there's no dialogue, sure, but also I'm not entirely sure of the necessity of this strip.  I needed a tone changer between the beginning and the next bit, so I figured putting all the main characters together in a single strip worked best. Also: ITS THE BAD GUYS FROM ISSUES 2 AND 3! Was it intentional? You'll never know!  What do you think?

Edit: So, Between this strip's original posting and when you're reading this, I broke the flash drive this post's original files were created on, and in turn, lost the files themselves.  While it was possible to recreate and upgrade them (the original version didn't have any character animation, btw), I'm making a note of it in the interest of full disclosure, and to address incongruities between the comic you're reading and the process video you might be watching. When the new process videos go up, the links will be fixed. Sorry for the glitch, and enjoy the comic!

I have to admit, I'm kinda glad I picked a superhero comic to do a animated comic with (given that they lend themselves to visually dynamic conflicts and conflict resolution), because without action, there wouldn't be as much need for animation, and the lack of both is starting to get to me...
